Among all gorges of Trans-Ili Alatau, the Small Almaty Gorge is the most branchy and consists from the numerous gaps, cracks and ravines, each of them are rather large and deep gorges with steep and gentle slopes, peculiar wild and cultural landscape. All of them belong to the basin of the Small Almaty River or directly adjacent to it. The main axis of the gorge runs through the world known sports complex Medeo, where this trekking route to Butakovka Gorge starts.

Road to Butakovka gorge lies through Kim-Asar gorge, more known as «Commissar» gorge. One of the theories of such name it is translation from the Kazakh language the word «kimasar» - "who will pass." It is quite possible, that in the years after the October revolution, in the days of intense work and promotion of Lenin’s ideas, Red commissars, led by Furmanov, loved to relax here with vodka and caviar. No wonder that the most tourist popular peak in the gorge, with the height of 2850 m has the name of a politician - Furmanov.

The walking route is mostly runs along the Kimasar River and leads to the destination - Butakovka Gorge, which picturesque views, clean air, coolness in in hot summer days, attract tourists to this gorge for a long time already. On the slopes of the gorge rises Tien Shan spruce, aspen, ash and barberry. There are also pine and birch trees. The banks of the small Butakovka River are covered with thickets of willow and Tien Shan birch.

The main attraction of Butakovka Gorge - its waterfalls. There are two of them: the lower one of 15 meters in height is the most popular among tourists. The upper waterfall is smaller than the lower one and located at a distance of two kilometers higher in the gorge. The left branch of the Butakovka Gorge quickly ends with a steep rise of almost vertical rock outcrops. Butakovka Waterfall. For thousands of years a small stream has divided the broad rock almost into two halves, cut the crack of 30 meters in depth and smoothed its edges with fancy ledges, eaves and vents. The width of the waterfall at the bottom is more than 15 meters. Splashes and water mist cover a huge area, and on sunny days almost constant rainbow rises in height or descends to the ground.

At the waterfall you can make beautiful pictures or stand under an icy shower in the hot summer days - even not trained tourists couldn't refrain from this temptation. And if you are a climber, Butakovka waterfall provides you with excellent rocky massif with numerous routes.
